RSI Installs Micro Matic Custom Beer Tower System

RSI installed a custom 40-tap Micro Matic Draught Beer System with a Micro Matic Custom Beer Tower for Legal Draft in Arlington, TX. Legal Draft is a new craft brewery located in the newly revitalized downtown area.

After installing a 17 barrel brewhouse, Greg McCarthy wanted to install a tap room for the guests and customers to taste and try the wares. He turned to local business owner George Kramerov, who recommended RSI as the go to Installer and Factory Certified company to use.

“RSI put in our tap system including the custom tower [which] is Micro Matic. And, all of the guts of the system back in the cooler are too. It’s all been a good relationship with the folks at RSI. They’ve done great. Also, I was referred to RSI by George Kramerov over at Kool Keg.

Greg McCarthy: Founder Legal Draft

The Needs and Requirements of Legal Draft

David Hester of RSI met with McCarthy and Legal Draft to review their needs and determine their requirements and wants.  Once David had a good understanding of what Legal Draft was trying to accomplish with their Tap Room, he could make some qualified recommendations.

After listening to what was important to Legal Draft, David knew the look was important but also the quality of the pour was paramount.

David recommended a Micro Matic Beer System for the back end to get quality pours. He then paired this with a Micro Matic Custom Beer Tower on the front end to achieve the visual look they requested.

The custom Micro Matic Beer Tower integrates seamlessly with the Micro Matic back end to provide the perfect pour each time.

This Micro Matic Custom Tower and Beer System met the requirements Legal Draft requested while providing the rustic industrial look they desired.

Micro Matic Custom Tower Program

The Micro Matic Custom Beer Tower Program allows authorized vendors to design a tower for their customer that will match the look the customer requires.  Micro Matic builds the custom towers to the same exacting standards as their stock offerings.

“Adding a few additional weeks to the delivery time of a standard Micro Matic Tower is a good trade off if you require an entirely custom look for your establishment.” said David Hester.

Legal Draft’s tower is a wall mounted 40-tap custom unit that weighs over 500 pounds.  It is massive and elegant at the same time.  This custom tower provides a look that integrates with the rustic industrial theme of the taproom and could not be achieved economically without the custom program.

The tower comes from Micro Matic with the glycol trunk lines pre-installed and tested.  Once RSI mounted the custom tower on the wall, they installed the rest of the system.

The Micro Matic Pro-Line Glycol Power Pack showing the 29 degree temperature they system is able to maintain. This workhorse unit can support trunk lines of 250 feet and is a dual motor dual pump unit supporting 40 taps.

RSI specified the 4303 Pro-Line Glycol Power Pack back end is the heart of the system and feeds the 40-tap custom tower on the front end.

The 4303 installed for Legal Draft is an air-cooled, 208 volts single-phase unit. The 4303 Power Pak comes with a ¾ HP compressor and 2 pumps and 2 motors.  Maximum Power Pak to tower distance is 350 feet.

With the distance to the tower is less than 350 feet most people would specify a lower rated model like a 4301 at 125 feet, or a 4302 at 250 feet.  However, by working with Legal Draft, RSI defined the higher rated unit for the following reasons.

  • Keg cooler has drive-in access (meaning temperature fluctuates considerably at times)
  • 40-tap Custom Beer Tower over 20 feet long
  • 100+ degree Texas Summers
  • A higher rated system allows headroom
  • Craft Brewery- quality pours more important than slight cost savings

Additionally, the 4303 system uses a ¾ HP compressor compared to the 1/3 HP or ½ HP or the two lower models.  This added HP provides a robust system not strained by the extended requirements of the custom tower system.

This 4303 Power Pak sits on a stainless steel Power Pack Rack at the end of the custom tower.  This allows for good airflow and easy access for maintenance.  It is also easy to see the temperature of the system by viewing the readout. The readout also shows error codes if there is ever an issue.

Inside the Drive-In Keg Cooler

Inside the Keg Cooler RSI installed regulators and shut off valves for each tap. This system does not use FOB’s on each line. As a through-the-wall system, FOB’s were not required because the length of the line to the tap is short.

Two master Co2 gas lines feed the system; One line for the first 20 taps and, the second line for the last 20 taps. Typically, RSI tapped the master line as needed to feed the regulators.  This helps when balancing the system as it is easier to fine-tune the regulators.

Close Up of the Legal Draft Installation. This shows the dual regulator setup of each tap pair. Each regulator can be adjusted independently.
The far left pair is connected to two kegs, but the valves are closed for no flow.  The center regulators are not connected to kegs.  The far right regulator pair has the left valve closed while the right valve is open because it is connected to a keg.

To refine the pressure required to push the beer, and balance the system, RSI adjusted the regulators and added specific lengths of restrictor hose as needed.

Conclusion

RSI provided Legal Draft with a draught beer system to meet their needs.  The 40-tap Custom Tower Micro Matic Beer System incorporates a wall hung Micro Matic Custom Beer Tower. This matches Legal Draft’s rustic industrial look. On the back end RSI installed a Micro Matic 4303 Pro-Line Glycol Power Pack for maintaining a quality pour expected from a craft brewery.  The Micro Matic Beer System will provide Legal Draft with years of quality service.
